DOOLY COUNTY RECREATION DEPARTMENT (DCRD) SPORTS
FALL
- Youth Football for ages 5-12
- Youth Cheerleading for ages 7-12
Almost 200 children participate in the DCRD during the youth football season. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
nights, you can find games being played under the lights of the DCRD complex in Vienna. Each team looks forward to
the yearly Big Pig Jig Bowl in mid-October, and you've missed a real treat if you've never seen the 5- and
6-year-old flag football players run around. In fact, any game being played on a Fall Football night is a big event
with dance teams, cheerleaders, and always worth the price of admission--FREE! So sit back with a bag of boiled
peanuts and get ready to enjoy the hard-hitting action of the DCRD youth football leagues.
WINTER
- Youth Basketball for ages 7-12
Early wintery Saturday mornings find the DCRD taking to the court in both the newly renovated Unadilla gymnasium
and the Vienna Elementary Gymnasium. Girls and boys race up and down the floor all day, and you as a fan will never
forget the look on a child's face when he or she rings their first ever free throw! Once our league has completed
its regular season schedule, our All-Star teams move on to the District and State level competitions where our
teams have had great success in the past. In fact, our 9- and 10-year-old girls won the State Championship in 2000,
although most of our teams don't know if they have won or lost (just ask them!). To the DCRD, they're all
winners!
SPRING
- Youth Baseball for ages 5-18
- Youth Fast Pitch Softball for ages 7-12
- Roger Kingdom Olympic Day - Track and Field for ages 7-12
Our Baseball and Softball season begins in mid-April with Opening Day Ceremonies, Picture Days, and Pennant-winning
aspirations. At the Dooly County Youth Baseball Complex in Vienna, you can find tee-ballers, soft-ballers, and
little-leaguers playing our national past time and making their parents proud. The complex is located between two
Dooly County landmarks: the Tyson chicken processing plant and the Big Pig Jig festival site. We are very proud of
our fields and the love for the game they create. In fact, our newest addition to the complex is an old-fashioned
scoreboard on our 13- and 14-year-old field, which displays all of our championships to passers-by on I-75. So if
you happen to be heading south and see the lights on, swing on by and see a game in the breeding ground for
success.
SUMMER
- Summer Remedial Program
The summer months find the DCRD working in conjunction with the Dooly County Board of Education and the Dooly
County Community Enrichment Coalition to provide classes for the summer remedial program. Children who need more
time in order to improve their academic skills brush up on their motor skills and dexterity as well as reading and
writing. The children learn team sports and character building exercises between classes and field trips, and they
are often seen growing and maturing due to this learning environment. We as a department really enjoy being a part
of this program; we feel it promotes the partnering of athletics with academics and helps us to continue in our
efforts to create.
GOLF
Experience the scenic countryside while taking advantage of a "shortcut" to Georgia Veteran's Park, where an
18-hole golf course and fishing are among the activities found along Lake Blackshear.
